UEFA Euro 2024 – Right on our doorstep in Cologne
16.06.2024
The UEFA European Championship 2024 has begun! From 14 June to 14 July, the best teams in Europe will compete to win the coveted title. We are especially looking forward to the exciting matches taking place in Cologne, “just around the corner” at the RheinEnergieSTADION, and to welcoming many international guests.
Cologne is renowned for its vibrant football culture and hospitality. During Euro 2024, the city will become a bustling hub for fans from Cologne and all over Europe, who will be able to experience the Cologne lifestyle up close. The Heumarkt in Cologne has turned into a large fan zone, and there are many public viewing events, including at Konrad-Adenauer-Ufer, Tanzbrunnen, the racecourse, and Rheinauhafen.

Here is a typical Cologne dish, perfect as a quick snack during the football matches.
Halver Hahn
The name of this dish often causes confusion, as many expect it to be half a chicken. However, it has nothing to do with poultry. There are many versions of how the dish got its name. One story goes: “Ääver isch will doch bloß ne halve han.” (“But I only want to have half.”). This is what a guest supposedly said in “Kölsch” (the Cologne dialect) to the innkeeper when he served the cheese with a whole rye roll. The “Halver Hahn” is a typical example of Rhineland cuisine, which often consists of simple yet tasty ingredients and shows how regional specialties and linguistic peculiarities contribute to a city’s cultural identity.
Ingredients:
- 4 Röggelchen (small rye rolls)
- 200 g medium-aged Gouda (in thick slices)
- 2 pickles
- 1 large onion
- Mustard (spicy/mild)
- Butter
Preparation:
- Cut the Röggelchen in half and spread with butter.
- Place a slice of Gouda on each half.
- Cut the onion into fine rings and place on the cheese.
- Slice the pickles and add them.
- Serve with a dollop of mustard.
We look forward to sharing these exciting moments with you and hope your favourite team goes far. Enjoy the UEFA Euro 2024!
Have fun & bon appétit!
Best regards,
